‘Storytellers’ was a big outreach event during three evening services at St Matthews Church on 2, 9 and 16 June. Our evening services are usually targeted at the youth and young adults, but this event brought in all age groups from our church and community. Each evening consisted of a musician, gospel talk and, of course, delicious supper. each guest artists shared their original creations and their stories behind their music. We also got to hear briefly about their Christian journey during an interview session.
The first evening our musician was Brigitte Stanford (from St Matthews Church) and our speaker was Mark Parris. Brigitte is from the band Stanford. They have been gigging around Cape Town for about a year now and their fan base is rapidly growing among Capetonians. Brigitte has also been a part of our worship team for many years. The second evening our musician was Bethany Dickson Mahnke (from St Matthews Church) and our speaker was Mike Emslie. Bethany is well known for her theater involvement over the years and will be starring as ‘Maria’ in The Sound of Music in 2014. Bethany has always had a love for music and songwriting and performed some of her original work for us. She has also been a part of our worship team for many years. The third evening our musician was Bruce Retief (from St Peters Church, Fish Hoek) and our speaker was Bishop Frank Retief. Bruce is a music composer and did the music for the international animation film Zambezia. Bruce is known for other well received compositions in South Africa and internationally. This event has been a great highlight so far this year. Each speaker told the ultimate story of Jesus Christ and how He should fit into our own personal life stories. we enjoyed a great time of fellowship and entertainment, and most importantly, the gospel was heard and seeds were planted. May the fruits of this be changed lives.
