The Lectionary and the Church Year

Every year we include in our yearbook a lectionary of readings for the year. This is related to two principles operative in the early church and reiterated at the Reformation, namely the orderly reading of Scripture in the congregation, and ensuring that the great themes of the Christian Message are recalled regularly. To maintain these principles, the Scripture readings are arranged in two ways. For the most part there is a consecutive reading of large sections of the Old and New Testaments, but on special days associated in a particular way with our redemption, we have readings appropriate to the season.

While the Church Year is not designed to bring God’s liberated people into bondage to “special days and months and seasons and years” (Galatians 4:10), it does enable us to emphasise those truths and events that are at the heart of our faith.
