Rt. Rev. Njabulo Mazibuko longs to see REACH-SA’s vision to revitalise township churches realised. 

One such area of opportunity is the bustling Madadeni Township, situated on the outskirts of Newcastle, one of the largest towns in KwaZulu-Natal’s north-west region. 

Home to 200 000 people, with more than 60% of its population under 35, Madadeni is rapidly expanding. High unemployment rates, especially among youth, limited infrastructure in outlying areas, and growing disillusionment with institutions mean the area is in desperate need of upliftment. 

Behind these statistics are thousands of people who need to hear the hope of the Gospel.

An Unfinished Gospel Work 

REACH-SA planted a church in this area in 1979, but, due to a lack of leadership, it never took off. 

REACH-SA Madadeni Church, as it is known today, bought two adjacent pieces of land and began to erect a church and house. However, funds quickly dried up.

“The partially-completed structures have become symbolic of the spiritual and developmental neglect experienced by the community,” said Mazibuko.

“No other gospel-centered, reformed ministry exists within a close radius, leaving residents with limited access to clear, bible-based teaching and holistic community outreach.” 

The challenges of the past have not diminished the need—or the opportunity—for a faithful Gospel witness in Madadeni. Instead, they have strengthened the resolve to see the church revitalised for generations to come. 

A Vision for Gospel Renewal

Mazibuko believes that revitalising the church in Madadeni is about far more than one congregation. It is an opportunity to establish a strong Gospel witness that could support future church planting across the wider region. 

Potential plants could expand to Fryheid, Ulundi and Eastern Mpumalanga regions, transforming thousands of lives. 

He described the remaining members at REACH-SA Madadeni Church as sheep without a shepherd. 

More Than a Building 

The revitalisation project in Madadeni is raising funds to complete the building of a multi-purpose centre, which will:

• Serve as a worship centre for over 150 congregants
• Host regular bible teaching, evangelism training and youth mentorship programmes
• Operate an ECD registered under ISASA standards
• Provide parenting support, academic tutoring and job readiness skills for youth
• Train and mentor future church leaders, particularly from under-resourced backgrounds.
